Silver nanoparticles may help fight dental infections

Yeasts that create mouth infections could be wiped out using silver nanoparticles within the laboratory, researchers in Portugal have discovered. The scientists aspire to test silver nanoparticles in mouth wash and veneers like a potential preventative measure from the infections, that are triggered by Candidiasis and Candida glabrata and concentrate on the youthful, old and immunocompromised.

The research was carried out by Prof. Mariana Henriques and her co-workers in the College of Minho in Largo do Paço, who looked into the anti-yeast qualities of silver nanoparticles of various dimensions to find out their effect against C. albicans and C. glabrata. Both of these yeasts cause various infections, including dental thrush and dental stomatitis, an unpleasant infection that affects around seven from ten denture users. Infections such as these are particularly hard to treat since the micro-microorganisms involved form biofilms.

The researchers used artificial biofilms in problems that resembled individuals of saliva as carefully as you possibly can. Then they added different dimensions and levels of silver nanoparticles and located that nanoparticles of various dimensions were equally good at killing the yeasts. Because of the plethora of dimensions of nanoparticles with anti-yeast qualities, the scientists hope this can let the nanoparticles for use in several programs.

Some scientists have expressed concerns concerning the safety of nanoparticle use however the Portuguese researchers stressed this scientific studies are in an initial phase and extensive safety tests is going to be completed before any product reaches the marketplace.

“With the emergence of candida infections, that are frequently up against the traditional anti-yeast treatments, there's an growing requirement for alternative approaches. So, silver nanoparticles seem like new potential technique to combat these infections,” Henriques stated. “As the nanoparticles are relatively stable inside a liquid medium they may be progressed into a mouth wash solution soon.”

Continuing to move forward, Henriques hopes to integrate silver nanoparticles into veneers, that could prevent infections from establishing itself.
